GTA transit needs wide vision

-

Re Pros and cons to Superlinx regional transit proposal, Letters, Dec. 2 Firefighters and police work in Toronto and live in Milton, Ajax and Barrie. Airport staff at Pearson reside in Burlington, Etobicoke or Whitby. The downtown bank towers have staff from Oakville, Markham and Pickering, etc. Thus a regional transit plan makes good sense.

No municipal councils really understand the complex geography of commuters in the GTA, with a population of sixmillion. Nor do they have the jurisdiction, interest or authority to build a subway network as extensive as you find in other major cities.

Toronto council looks at subway solutions through the small end of a telescope. Adding or subtracting a lane on Bloor, Jarvis or King may aid local circulation. But the thousands of commuters squeezed each day onto the QEW, 427, 401, the DVP and the Gardiner urgently need solutions beyond the scope of any municipal mayor or council.
