Joshua Boyle remanded in custody
Former hostage will remain in Ottawa detention centre for at least another week
OTTAWA— Joshua Boyle, the former hostage in Afghanistan and Pakistan charged with offences that include sexual assault and unlawful confinement, was remanded in custody Monday after a court appearance.
Boyle appeared by video from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, where he stood, arms crossed, in an orange prison jumpsuit.
He was remanded in custody for another week at the request of his defence team. Boyle raised his eyebrows and shrugged when the judge told him he would remain in custody for at least another week before a bail hearing will be held.
His lawyer, Eric Granger, made no comment on the case. “It’s still early,” he said. Boyle is scheduled to appear in court again Monday.
The 34-year-old faces 15 charges that include eight counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of unlawful confinement and one count each of uttering death threats, misleading police, and giving someone a noxious substance.
A court order prevents the publication of information that could identify any alleged victims in the case.
Police allege all the offences occurred between Oct. 14 and Dec. 30, 2017, after Boyle and his family returned to Canada.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
