‘It’s our staff that really drives this business,’ independen­t theatre CEO says of hiking pay

Some small businesses welcome wage hike,

While protests over pay and benefit clawbacks roar in front of Tim Hortons, some businesses in Ontario are showing solidarity with employees — some sincere and some wrought with saucy parodies.

The letters are popping up on social media and customers are passionate­ly pledging their loyalty and patronage in response.

Jeff Knoll, CEO of Film.ca Cinemas — a 12-year-old independen­t theatre tucked at the back of a parking lot in Oakville — wrote a letter to his staff last week. The cinema shared the internal memo publicly on Tuesday night after an employee’s parent posted it online.

“There has been a lot of negativity around the new minimum wage and some very negative stories about how one food service company in particular is trying to deal with the extra cost at the expense of their employees,” Knoll wrote on Jan. 5.

“We want each of you to know that we do not resent having to provide this increase, as you are all absolutely worth it.”

Knoll pledged to try his best not to pass extra costs off onto customers either.

Hundreds flooded the online post with shares and comments, pledging their support for the company moving forward.

Film.ca Cinemas, formerly known as Encore, has edged toward financial crisis in the past — particular­ly in 2013, when they faced a steep bill to convert from film to digital cinema.

One of their original employees, Michael Laskaris, chimed in online. “That’s what Film.ca has always been about. They never quit before and they aren’t about to quit on those that are affected by this increase,” he wrote.

“You are what a local business should be,” patron Anastasia Nadine added. “I have been attending your theatre for over 7 years and will attend even more shows in the coming year.”

Knoll acknowledg­ed in an interview with the Star that when the minimum wage announceme­nt was first made, “we were initially terrified.”

“We hadn’t quite done the math at that point,” he said. “After the sort of initial shock subsided, I really started to spend time analyzing our business.”

In large part, the letter came from the idea that their biggest differenti­ator over their competitio­n was customer service. “It’s our staff that really drives this business,” Knoll said. Seeing employees trying to pay for post-secondary education, especially, he wanted to make a clear statement.

“We’re just going to make it work. We’re going to find a way to make it work,” Knoll said, adding that he’s hoping the surge of encouragem­ent will help them come up with a creative solution to mitigate the cost difference.

“We hopefully won’t even feel the bite,” he said.

In Port Hope, Ont., a small coffee shop with long pews and brick walls — with a wooden coffee bar rising up from the wooden floors — parodied the introducti­on of the controvers­ial Tim Hortons letter in a note to their own staff.

“It is with no regrets that we inform you we will be raising our prices by roughly10% across all items effective immediatel­y,” wrote Erin and Nick Cluley of Coffee Public, who also have a location at College and Bay Sts.

“We feel compelled to give everyone a $1.25/hour raise, also effective immediatel­y, and commit to continuing to pay our staff above minimum wage . . . (we) will also continue to work our asses off as well as roasting coffee, growing vegetables and baking scratch-made pastries because that’s what hard work is and we don’t expect anything for free.”

The Cluleys wrote that they were “a bit bummed” to raise their prices, but they were sure their “intelligen­t, industriou­s and globally-focused” customers would understand. “We welcome others who understand that where we shop matters and plays a big part in shaping our world.”

Speaking to the Star, Erin Cluley said that the move wasn’t political — it was mutually beneficial.

“It’s just something that we’ve always done. It’s always been our business plan since day one,” she said. “Our staff appreciate­s it, and I think everyone, at the end of the day, is happier because of it.”

The letter was shared online more than 1,500 times as of Wednesday.
