No thanks to helping Toronto host World Cup games

-

Re World Cup would be more than just a party,

Jan. 23 Columnist Edward Keenan wants Toronto to host some games of the World Cup. To enable Toronto, he wants the rest of Canada and the rest of Ontario to fund it, as Toronto’s share would be a mere $10 million and these things always run to huge extra costs. The trouble is that only the rich, the politicians of Ottawa and Queen’s Park, and Toronto hotel owners will benefit, while the rest of us will merely pay for most of it.

No thanks, Mayor John Tory. Bread and circuses have a way of proving useless. Keenan hints at building toward future extravaganzas, such as the Olympics. No thanks again. These things never pay for themselves. Charles Hooker, East Garafraxa, Ont.
