> A SAMPLING OF CORE ARCHITECTS DESIGNS
Seventy5 Portland, Freed Developments This 11-storey building at 75 Portland St. embraces the culture of its dynamic neighbourhood. Developer Peter Freed wanted to create a unique statement with the façade, which is distinguished by glassfronted, cantilevered balconies suspended over the street. The exterior features smooth concrete and clear glazing in anodized aluminum frames. The U-shape surrounds a serene courtyard and complements the Portland streetscape. A flash of yellow is emblazoned over the front entrance and repeated within the entrance hall. Six50 King, Freed Developments This project at 650 King St. W. consists of 10- and 16-storey buildings and includes ribbons of green boxwood hedge on its terraces. Its contemporary, environmentally friendly design juxtaposes old neighbourhood brick and new green growth. The hedges add horizontal detail to the buildings’ height. 401 King West; Terracap Group This mixed-use highrise with 21- and 37-storey towers is in development and will offer retail and condo units, some geared to families. The podium will provide street and secondfloor-level retail space, with the third floor reserved for offices. The residential towers above will include studios, two-floor apartments and family-sized three bedroom suites. Fashion House, 560 King St. W.; Freed Developments In a tribute to Toronto’s historic Fashion District, Fashion House brought together developer, architect, community and interior and fashion designers in a unique collaboration. Comprised of 11 and 12 storeys, the project has public spaces at street level and a thoroughfare that connects Morrison and King Sts. The project includes the Silver plate Heritage Building and new construction that resembles stacked building blocks with floors that are cantilevered, offset and overlaid over each other atop a glass-box podium. The red curtains, with white interiors, reference the garment district. 20 Stewart Condos, Freed Developments This nine-storey building is home to 59 lofts at 20 Stewart St. It creates a bold exterior with elongated, rectangular glass slivers varying in colour, random in nature, separated by anodized aluminum mullions. It shares a mechanical room and parking ramps with the neighbouring condo, 66 Portland. M City Condos, 3980 Confederation Parkway, Mississauga; Rogers Real Estate Investments Ltd./ Urban Capital Property Group The structure will be a defining project for Mississauga’s new urban core. The first of 10 residential condo towers, its design is a sculptural 60-storey tower on a five-storey podium that contains public facilities, plus retail and recreational uses. Unlike Toronto’s 19th-century downtown heritage, Mississauga’s urban core is a blank canvas allowing the creation of large-scale architecture. The first tower will be the highest part of M City with a unique geometry in a series of twisted horizontal bands forming the shaft of the tower.
