Street fights through the years: A quiz

- —Katie Daubs

If the battle over Toronto’s streets seems never-ending, it’s with good reason. Congestion problems have plagued the city for more than a century. Take a guess at whether the following quotes are from times modern or past (the answers are on IN9): 1) “What difference does it make where pedestrians cross the streets…drivers seem to think that the only thing required is to give a blast on the horn, and if you do not get out of the way you are killed. If you happen to escape they will turn round and laugh in your face.”

a) 1921 b) 2017 2) “When will someone start clamping down on the two-wheeler devils who disobey almost all the rules of the road?

a) 1900 b) 2017 3) “A more barbarous and uncomfortable arrangement of seats could hardly be conceived, passengers being compelled to climb over the knee of men and women to get to the seats and then sit closely in a cramped position, often vis a vis with strangers through the trip.”

a) 1892 b) 2016 4) “Cyclists are not the narrowminded, selfish creatures that some would have the world think us.”

a) 1896 b) 2011 5) “King St. isn’t working today. It doesn’t work for drivers, it doesn’t work for people on the streetcar and it certainly doesn’t work for pedestrians.”

a) 1926 b) 2017 6) “We are willing to share our roads with any person, whether he be on foot or in an automobile.”

a) 1908 b) 2016 7) “The greatest single cause of congestion in Toronto is vehicles parked on the streets.”

a) 1926 b) 2018
