More celebs back students’ gun control march Briefly
Celebrities are flocking to contribute to the gun control campaign by student survivors of a shooting rampage in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17. After George and Amal Clooney announced Tuesday that they are donating to the students’ March for Our Lives, Oprah Winfrey, film executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and director Steven Spielberg joined the cause.
Winfrey tweeted to the Clooneys that she will “match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’ These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.”
Katzenberg and wife Marilyn, and Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw are also ponying up $500,000 (U.S.) each.
The group March for Our Lives announced Sunday that they will march in the U.S. capital and other cities on March 24 to demand safer schools and legislation “to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant” across the nation. USA Today
Academy Award-nominated actor Viggo Mortensen will chair the international jury panel for the 12th Glenn Gould Prize. His fellow panelists include tattoo and makeup artist Kat Von D; Oscar-winning Canadian director François Girard; German actress Ute Lemper; former chief justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin; Iranian painter Naeemeh Naeemaei; Canadian soprano Sondra Radvanovsky; Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore; Gambian composer Foday Musa Suso and Chinese composer Ye Xiaogang. The winner of the $100,000 prize will be announced April 13.
Author Salman Rushdie, performance artist Andrea Fraser and filmmaker Charles Officer are in the hot seats for AGO Creative Minds at Massey Hall on April 4.
