More celebs back students’ gun control march Briefly

Celebritie­s are flocking to contribute to the gun control campaign by student survivors of a shooting rampage in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17. After George and Amal Clooney announced Tuesday that they are donating to the students’ March for Our Lives, Oprah Winfrey, film executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and director Steven Spielberg joined the cause.

Winfrey tweeted to the Clooneys that she will “match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’ These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.”

Katzenberg and wife Marilyn, and Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw are also ponying up $500,000 (U.S.) each.

The group March for Our Lives announced Sunday that they will march in the U.S. capital and other cities on March 24 to demand safer schools and legislatio­n “to effectivel­y address the gun violence issues that are rampant” across the nation. USA Today

Academy Award-nominated actor Viggo Mortensen will chair the internatio­nal jury panel for the 12th Glenn Gould Prize. His fellow panelists include tattoo and makeup artist Kat Von D; Oscar-winning Canadian director François Girard; German actress Ute Lemper; former chief justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin; Iranian painter Naeemeh Naeemaei; Canadian soprano Sondra Radvanovsk­y; Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore; Gambian composer Foday Musa Suso and Chinese composer Ye Xiaogang. The winner of the $100,000 prize will be announced April 13.

Author Salman Rushdie, performanc­e artist Andrea Fraser and filmmaker Charles Officer are in the hot seats for AGO Creative Minds at Massey Hall on April 4. The trio will have a 90-minute conversati­on about discoverin­g truth through art. It will be live-streamed at cbc.ca/ arts and broadcast on CBC Radio One. Four months before Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits theatres, Universal Pictures has announced a third instalment, Jurassic World 3, to land in June 2021.

Wonder Woman and Luke Skywalker will be at the Academy Awards. Their alter egos, Gal Gadot and Mark Hamill, will present Oscars at the March 4 ceremony, along with Star Wars actors Oscar Isaac and Kelly Marie Tran, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Gina Rodriguez, Armie Hammer and Zendaya.

Mitch Albom is giving heaven a sequel. The Next Person You Meet in Heaven, a followup to Albom’s bestsellin­g The Five People You Meet in Heaven, is due out on Oct. 16. The new book continues the stories of original characters Eddie and Annie, publisher Harper says. Star staff, wire services
