T.O.-shot TV, film win costume prizes
Wonder Woman’s gilded bustier, the spangled skating dresses in I, Tonya and the subdued shades of the 1960s in The Shape of Water were among the finest costumes of the year, according to the Costume Designers Guild.
At its 20th annual awards Tuesday night, the guild honoured Wonder Woman for sci-fi/fantasy costumes; I, Tonya for contemporary film and The Shape of Water (also up for the costume design Oscar) for period attire. In television, Game of Thrones won for sci-fi/fantasy, The Crown for period and The Handmaid’s Tale, which is shot in Toronto, for contemporary.
Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro received a special Distinguished Collaborator Award.
Actor Doug Jones, the amphibian creature in del Toro’s Toronto-shot movie, presented the award and compared the director to Walt Disney and George Lucas.
