Arrest made in connection to cyclist’s killing
Two other men sought after man hit by a SUV, stabbed in Little Portugal
The death of a cyclist who was struck, then assaulted and stabbed on Saturday is now considered a homicide, Toronto police say. Investigators have arrested one person in connection to the incident. Police are still searching for two people.
Police said they received the call around 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening. The male cyclist was unconscious and not breathing when they arrived at Frankish and Sheridan Aves., near Dundas St. W. and Dufferin St. in Little Portugal. The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Aaron Rankine-Wright.
While early reports indicated Rankine-Wright had been shot, Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone said that a post-mortem showed the cause of death was a stab wound. Rankine-Wright was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he later died.
Carbone said that RankineWright had left his apartment on his bicycle, and was headed to work. He was followed by a dark-coloured SUV, Carbone said, which struck him. The vehicle mounted and then got lodged on the curb, and the three suspects exited and assaulted Rankine-Wright. They fled the area on foot, heading northbound towards Dundas, Carbone said.
Carbone said that a 17-yearold boy has been arrested, and will be appearing in court Sunday in connection to the homi- cide. The teen cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police are seeking two other suspects connected to the incident, who are described only as males in their teens to early 20s.
