KEY PLAYERS
Cron/Morales Toronto needs more from its designated hitter Kendrys Morales, whose average improved to .213 on the season after going 8-for-26 with an RBI during the Jays’ six-game homestand. Morales’s counterpart in St. Petersburg, C.J. Cron, has put the Rays on his back with a team-leading 15 home runs and 36 RBIs. Cron’s home-run tally is just one away from matching a career high in a single season.
NEED TO KNOW
The Rays are expect to continue their “bullpenning” experiment on Monday by handing the ball to Ryan Yarbrough, typically a reliever, in the early innings. Yarbrough has made 14 appearances but just three starts this season, pitching 141⁄ innings from the get-go with a 4.91 ERA ... Toronto (3035) leapfrogged Tampa Bay (29-35) to move into third place in the American League East on Sunday, sitting at No. 3 for the first time since May 25 ... Tampa Bay has a number of names on theDL, including right-hander Chris Archer (abdomen), centre fielder Kevin Kiermaier (thumb) and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria (hamstring) ... A win on Monday would give Toronto five straight victories, becoming its longest streak of the season; a quality start from Sam Gaviglio would give the Jays eight straight in that category.
ON DECK
Three games vs. Washington, starting Friday.
