Canadian killed in Philippines

Victim’s wife also injured during ‘targeted’ shooting

- ILYA BAÑARES STAFF REPORTER

A Canadian man was shot repeatedly outside his home in the Philippines last month in an attack local police say was “targeted.” Barry Gammon, 66, of Montreal, was fatally shot on June 24 near Batangas City as his Filipino wife, Luzviminda Gammon, watched in horror. Police say she was injured as she fought off the attacker.

Local police say the shooting was “targeted,” and may have involved a property dispute.

Global Affairs Canada said they are aware of the incident and offer their “deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who was murdered in the Philippines.”

“Consular officials are providing consular assistance to the family during this difficult time,” spokesperson Amy Mills said.

Celedio said that Luzviminda Gammon — the lone witness — identified a suspect. Charges have been filed against the man and the police are waiting for a warrant to be issued by the courts before they proceed and make an arrest, Celedio said.

They declined to release the identity of the suspect pending the warrant.

Police say that around 7 p.m. on the night of the attack, two men on a motorcycle arrived outside the home, a two-hour drive southwest of Manila. When Gammon went to investigate, one of the men shot him multiple times, they said.

He was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead after several revival attempts.

Reports say that Gammon was retired and living in the Philippines with his wife and 9-yearold son.
