With the Loan Stars program, librarians across Canada vote on the book titles coming out each month that they believe should be available in the country’s library systems. Here are the top 10 for August: 1. Starlight, Richard Wagamese 2. French Exit, Patrick deWitt 3. The Saturday Night Ghost Club, Craig Davidson 4. I’m Afraid of Men, Vivek Shraya 5. Magic Triumphs, Ilona Andrews 6. Up From Freedom, Wayne Grady 7. Women Talking, Miriam Toews 8. Vox, Christina Dalcher 9. The Black God’s Drums, P. Djeli Clark 10. Rust & Stardust, T. Greenwood

This month, six of the books are from Canadian authors (1to 4, 6 and 7). Here’s what a few of the librarians who participated in the program across Canada had to say:

About I’m Afraid of Men: “(Vivek Shraya) gives an honest account of her experiences as a trans woman. ” — Allana Hiscock, Greater Victoria Public Library

About Magic Triumphs: “The book promises to maintain the high quality of the rest of the series, and I am looking forward to the book’s release!” — Anne-Marie Cerce, Greater Victoria Public Library

About Rust & Stardust: “There were times I had trouble reading this book due to the horrendous things that happen to Sally... The author does a wonderful job of showing how Sally’s abduction affects everyone, and each character has depth. A difficult but excellent read.” — Jennifer Green, Oshawa Public Library
