Youth must learn how city council affects their lives

-

The idea of municipal elections seems to go right over the heads of our 18- to 24-year-old voters. Why?

Speaking from the standpoint of a person in this age range, I would say that the biggest problem is that young people simply do not know what city council does.

The biggest responsibility councillors have that relates to youth is transit. Whether they’re working, in college or in university, transit is something young people rely on daily to get around. The faster and more reliable transit is, the faster and more stress free it is to get around.

As council is responsible for handing out liquor licences for venues and approving development around these areas, it has a big impact on entertainment, too. Council has the power to make places more vibrant and appealing to youth, and it’s also responsible for essential services like police, fire and ambulance.

With these considerations in mind, it is important that youth go out and vote in the upcoming municipal elections so we can enjoy, grow and help build the cities we want to live in!
