Sage Paul on inspiring change

-

To what trait do you attribute your success?

Love.

When/where are you most creative?

I feel most creative when I surround myself with stimulated inspiration, whether it is working with an incredible team, having multiple projects on the go at the same time in the studio, going to see other people’s shows or working in a coffee shop surrounded by lots of passersby.

How do you overcome a fear of change?

There has been a lot of change in my life that was out of my control, some more difficult than others. I imagine there will be a lot more change that I may or may not be able to prepare for. Change is an unknown that can be really scary. However, without change there would not be innovation. The fear doesn’t go away, but I experience change as an opportunity to learn, grow and be inspired.

What’s the best way to be heard?

I think the best way to get heard is not to seek it out but to work with and for like-minded people. We listen to each other and that is undeniable.

What has been your biggest hurdle?

Being patient and kind with myself.

Who is your hero?

My mom.

What do you hope is your legacy?

I hope to establish a prominent, sought-after and well-respected platform and market for Indigenous designers to access, benefit and thrive from.

What’s next for you?

We (the Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto collective) are working on the next IFWTO for late spring 2020. IFWTO will be in London (England) in February 2019 with Curtis Oland, an artist we nominated and who was selected for the British Council’s International Fashion Showcase during London Fashion Week. I am also working with Artscape Launchpad and Kerry Swanson to create a valuesbased entrepreneurship workshop for Indigenous women working in fashion, crafts and textiles. I am also excited to work with Ryerson University, School of Fashion on their advisory board. I think the advisory board will be critical in directing a conscious and exciting next generation for the fashion industry. I’m also designing an elective course for George Brown College: “Contemporary Indigenous Design.” I have a few shows coming up that will feature my own work in fashion. I need a manager … LOL.
