How to maximize your AutoShow experience

- Susan Gubasta

The 2019 Canadian International AutoShow opens in two weeks (Feb. 15–24), and already car lovers are planning their visit to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to find out what is new and exciting in the automotive world.

The AutoShow is Canada’s largest consumer show in size and attendance, and it attracts visitors of all ages. Whatever your interest in automobiles, the AutoShow offers something for everyone.

For those planning to attend the 2019 AutoShow, here are some tips that will help you get the most value out of your experience.

Visit autoshow.ca. This website is your online source for all of the features, exhibits, prizes and promotions. Here, you will find descriptions of the displays and exhibits, such as the Barrett-Jackson Canadian Collectors, the first-ever lifesize LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron, the Dubai-built hypercar (Devel Sixteen), the appearance of Mister Bentley (a British bulldog and internet sensation); media releases; venue map; frequently asked questions; show hours; food options, ticket information; and more.

Research your next vehicle Many car shoppers visit the show searching for information about their next new vehicle. The AutoShow features more than 1,000 cars, trucks, SUVs, concept cars, exotics, classics, muscle cars, fully electric and concept vehicles on display at the North and South Buildings. Car shoppers should use this opportunity to view the vehicles up close and to evaluate body styles, fuel efficiency, technology, safety features / ratings, horsepower and prices, and to speak with knowledgeable brand representatives.

Pack and dress accordingly Bring comfortable walking shoes and indoor attire, as you will be covering a lot of ground on foot. Avoid carrying bulky bags and heavy clothing. Winter coats, scarves, mitts and hats might become awkward to carry after a few hours, so use the coat checks or leave some outerwear in your car. Consider bringing bottled water, or purchase it at the show.

Plan your experience Use the free AutoShow Program, which is available when you arrive. It will help you to navigate your way through the spacious buildings so that you do not miss anything. Find out where the various automotive exhibits and special features are located, where to find free childcare (courtesy of the Volkswagen Dealers), EV test drives, merchandise for sale, food courts, live demonstrations and more. By planning your day, you will maximize the experience and value of your time spent at the show.

Learn about auto education and careers Everything you need to know about automotive education and careers can be found at the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association booth on the 700 Level of the South Building. Visitors can access the CarsAndJobs.com website, learn about various roles within the auto industry, enter contests and walk away with CarsAndJobs.com swag. The booth will include a live stage featuring presentations, panels and guest speakers discussing a wide range of topics: the Benefits and Best Practices of Career Fairs; The Importance of Apprenticeships & Co-ops; Using Networking to Tap Into the Hidden Job Market; Why Automotive is Perfect for Second Career Seekers; The Change in Workplace Culture; as well as conversations with vehicle design and race teams from several Ontario universities and how the evolution of technology is changing our industry. Education Day will be Friday, February 22nd and feature school and student-focused activities and events throughout the AutoShow.

Make a day of it Why not attend the show with friends, colleagues or family members, and make it an occasion? Plan to spend a few hours browsing through the North and South buildings. There are so many exciting developments happening in the auto- mobile industry, and dozens of excellent restaurants, pubs and bistros are nearby. The AutoShow is easily accessible by public transit and plenty of parking is available close by.

Next week, I’ll provide detailed information about the main features and attractions at the 2019 Canadian International AutoShow.
