Scheer follows Ford’s lead on platform

-

Re Time for Scheer to unveil his election platform plan, Hepburn, Jan. 31

Why would he? Doug Ford didn’t (although he seems to believe he did) and that strategy worked for him! Sharon Kirkham, Toronto Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is taking a page out of Premier Doug Ford’s playbook. Offer few of your own ideas and disparage your opponent’s record.

I don’t recall Ford talking about any of the policies he has implemented or is planning to. How well do you think he would have done if, during the debates, he casually mentioned that he may abolish full-day kindergarten?

The only promise I remember him making was a buck-a-beer and, as of this week, that promise has been broken. Scheer has also seen the antics of Donald Trump. Who can recall him promising a tax cut for the wealthy or a daily tweet storm of lies?

Ideally, a party must release its platform enough weeks before an election for the experts to analyze and offer opinions to voters. But would any government pass such a policy, much less even talk about it?

What’s that adage? It is better to stay silent and let people think you are a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

If Scheer has nothing to say, why should we listen? James Aguanno, Bradford Although columnist Bob Hepburn makes a point that Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, his spokespeople and his senior MPs “nitpick any and every Liberal initiative without saying what they would do differently,” how is that any different than when the Conservatives were in power under Brian Mulroney?

When Liberal MPs like Sheila Copps and Jean Augustine were asked how they would scrap the GST, they provided no specifics.

I voted for Augustine, who was my local MP, despite her answer: “We are doing more further studies.” John Clubine, Etobicoke
