NHL: Bergeron receives a crystal bowl, then gives Bruins an overtime goal
The Boston Bruins might want to keep celebrating Patrice Bergeron’s 1,000th NHL game.
Bergeron hit the milestone on Tuesday, and scored twice in a win over the New York Islanders. The Bruins honoured him on Saturday, and Bergeron scored the overtime winner a few hours later as Boston beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3.
The Bruins blew a two-goal lead in the game but won it on the power play as Bergeron fired a wrist shot from the right circle to beat Jonathan Quick. Bergeron also had two assists.
“The legend continues,” Boston winger Brad Marchand said. “It’s great to see him have the game that he had. It was a great ceremony at the start. He deserves all the recognition that he’s been getting, and he’s gotten, over the last few years.”
Earlier this week, the 33-yearold Bergeron became the fifth player in Bruins history to play 1,000 games with the team. The others are hall of famers Ray Bourque and John Bucyk, cur- rent GM Don Sweeney and Wayne Cashman.
Bucyk presented Bergeron with a crystal bowl on behalf of the NHL in a pregame ceremony. His teammates — led by captain Zdeno Chara, goaltender Tuukka Rask and forwards Brad Marchand, David Krejci and David Backes — gave him a family trip to a destination of his choice. He also received a picture hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2011. HART EIGHT: Carter Hart made 30 saves for his eighth straight victory, a 6-2 win over the slumping Anaheim Ducks 6-2 on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Hart tied an NHL record for most consecutive victories before turning 21, matching former Quebec netminder Jocelyn Thibault’s performance in March 1995. Hart helped the Flyers to a fast start, denying Jakob Silfverberg on a breakaway with a glove save 1:15 into the contest.
Anaheim lost its seventh game in a row and 19th in the last 21 while ending a forgettable six-game road trip. The Ducks have been outscored 37-8 during their skid.
Ryan Getzlaf had two assists while playing in his 967th contest, which set a club record for most games with the Ducks.
WEISE PICKUP: The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Dale Weise and defenceman Christian Folin from the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday in exchange for David Schlemko and Byron Froese. The Canadiens announced the trade Saturday morning.
