Toronto Star

Final spot wide open

-

á Reid-Foley, who will start in the Jays’ Grapefruit League finale against Detroit on Sunday, has a 6.23 ERA through 13 innings.

á Pannone, who gets the ball Tuesday, against Milwaukee in Montreal, has an11.12 ERA in11⁄ 3 spring innings.

á Gaviglio is the most experienced of the bunch after making 24 starts for Toronto last season. And he was putting up excellent spring numbers before giving up seven runs on eight hits in 31⁄ innings against 3 the Phillies on Thursday, with his ERA jumping from 1.29 to 5.19.

The 28-year-old Gaviglio, who is set to start on Monday in Montreal, also looks like the best option for long-relief duty in the bullpen, which will start the year without setup man Tepera and David Phelps, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Pannone and Thornton have also been float- ed as possible bullpen arms, though the club would prefer to keep the pair on starters’ routines in Buffalo.

All four pitchers are on the 40-man roster, which could be more attractive than having to add the likes of Justin Shafer, Jason Adam, Javy Guerra or Danny Barnes.

Toronto will need to add Bud Norris, and possibly utility infielder Eric Sogard, to the 40man roster before the season opens.

Tepera, Devon Travis and Dalton Pompey are all candidates to move to the 60-day injured list to create room.

And to think a week ago both the rotation and the bullpen seemed stable.
