Brampton father charged after woman, son hit by car

- EMMA SANDRI IAIN COLPITTS STAFF REPORTER BRAMPTON GUARDIAN

A mother and her 7-year-old son suffered critical injuries after they were struck by a pickup truck in the Brampton family’s driveway, allegedly with the father behind the wheel.

The two victims were hit in the area of Conductor Ln. and Portsdown Rd., near Creditview Rd. and Bovaird Dr. W., at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Peel police Const. Bancroft Wright said.

The 36-year-old woman and the child were transported to a local trauma centre and were first reported to be in lifethreatening condition. They are now in stable, non life-threatening condition.

Wright said the father had the door of his truck open in the family driveway when the vehicle backed up, hitting the son and mother before crashing into a neighbour’s home.

Wright said they’re married and live together in the home, but it is not being treated as a domestic dispute.

Wright added the vehicle initially started moving at a home to the right of where the victims were struck, did a circle backing up and crashed into the neighbouring house, causing structural damage. In the process, police said, an open door on the vehicle struck the woman and boy.

Samantha Stephenson, a resident in the area, said she was startled when she heard some of the commotion.

“I did hear (a woman) scream and the little boy was crying,” she said. “That’s when I heard the man saying, ‘What would you do? What would you do?’ ”

Johnathon Leon, 41, of Brampton, has since been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, Const. Iryna Yashnyk said.
