Celeb experts pick the best sunscreens

Here’s how to shield your skin like a Hollywood A-lister

- KATHERINE LALANCETTE

The multi-tasking mist

Kate Somerville has worked her magic on everyone from Olivia Wilde to Kate Hudson, and brought her A-list savvy to the masses thanks to her eponymous line. When it comes to sun protection, she’s all about easy, effective products like her aptly named UncompliKated. The SPF 50 spray fends off damage, locks in makeup and makes reapplying a breeze (something she recommends doing every two hours). Her biggest tip? “You want a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays,” she says. “I recommend using an SPF of at least 30 if not higher.” Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF 50 soft focus makeup setting spray, $49, sephora.ca

The hydrating cream

This former hip hop dancer has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after skin pros. Shani Darden tends to the famous faces of Jessica Alba, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Kelly Rowland (she actually appeared in a Destiny’s Child video back in the day). When it comes to sunscreen, she’s partial to this Supergoop! tube. “I love a lightweight yet hydrating sunscreen that can double as my daily moisturizer,” she says. “I’m a mom to two kids, so the simpler my mornings are, the better!” Supergoop! everyday sunscreen with sunflower extract SPF 50, $45, nordstrom.com

The lip protector

Montreal-based facialist Jennifer Brodeur counts icons like Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama as loyal clients. Interestingly, one of her fave sun care products isn’t designed for your face or body — it’s for your lips. “They’re so important and often overlooked,” Brodeur says, recommending Coola’s hydrating SPF 30 balm. She also warns against high SPF sunscreens, which can give wearers a false sense of security. “They can lead people to stay out in the sun longer and reapply sunscreen less often, increasing their chances of skin damage or cancer,” she explains. The anti-aging formula

She’s Sofia Vergara’s dermatologist. Need we say more? Unsurprisingly, anti-aging guru Dr. Dendy Engelman is very serious about sunscreen. “I apply a lot more on myself and my family than the average mom,” says the mother of two. She prefers physical filters, i.e. titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, to chemical ones and calls this broad-spectrum pick her go-to. It’s topped with powerful antioxidants for advanced protection against oxidative solar damage. iS Clinical extreme protect SPF 30, $87, skinmedix.com THE KIT Your all-in-one guide to the best fashion trends to try and the best beauty products to buy.
