Two dead in targeted shooting

Two men are dead after a targeted shooting Saturday at an apartment building in the Mount Dennis neighbourhood, and a third victim is in hospital with gunshot wounds, police say.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., police received a call about sounds of gunshots at 55 Emmett Ave., a highrise near Jane St. and Eglinton Ave. W.

Insp. Norm Proctor told reporters at the scene that police found two adult men unresponsive. One died at the scene. Another was transported to hospital, where he later died.

Shortly after the shooting, a third male victim who was suffering from serious but nonlife-threatening gunshot wounds showed up at a local hospital, said Const. David Hopkinsin.

He said a man was seen running to a nearby park following the shooting but could not confirm whether it might have been a suspect.

“There is absolutely no doubt based on the evidence … that this was, in fact, a very targeted crime,” Chief Mark Saunders said in a press conference Saturday afternoon.

He said at least one of the victims was being directly targeted but that all three might have been targets. He also said one of the victims who was killed was a wheelchair user.

Saunders said police are looking for one suspect, although he said more people could have been involved. The suspect is described as male, six-foot, with a muscular build and wearing “baby dreads” — short dreadlocks of about three to four inches.

“There’s a really good shot at solving this if we get the community and others to be aware,” said Saunders, who highlighted the hairstyle as something people should keep an eye out for.
