Man dies in ‘interaction’ with police

SIU called in after Peel officers investigated disturbance at a home

- IAIN COLPITTS MISSISSAUGA NEWS

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Mississauga man following an “interaction” with Peel Region police.

Police were called to a home on Morning Star Dr. near Cambrett Dr. where a disturbance was reported around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The SIU said officers became involved in an interaction with the man and a conducted energy weapon was used. Details about what happened leading up to the use of the weapon are unknown. The 34-year-old man was transported to hospital after investigators said his vital signs were absent.

He was pronounced dead later in the evening.

Neighbours said the man lived at the home with his mother, and his father had died recently. The news surprised some neighbours, including Kameel Rahal, who lives across the street and knew the family.

“It’s a very good family,” said Rahal, who also said he saw six or seven police cars outside the home Tuesday night.

“We sometimes sat together and would chat … It is very shocking.”

Another neighbour across the street, Gabriel DeSantis, believes the man may have been troubled by the death of his father.

“They never had trouble before and now they have trouble. I don’t know.” he said.

The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Five investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned in the investigation. Two subject officers and a witness officer were designated as well. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the SIU lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
