Jays’ Cherington new Pirates GM

The Blue Jays are losing a key member of their front office. Ben Cherington, the club’s vicepresid­ent of baseball operations, has accepted a new role as the GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cherington, 45, was offered the Pirates job Thursday and accepted Friday, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Cherington was Boston’s GM from 2011 to 2015 and won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2013.
