Alberta law will take away women’s rights

Re Bill could limit health care access: experts, Nov. 10

Alberta’s proposed conscience rights health care bill will limit access to safe abortions and must be reconsidered.

For the most part, it is women who bear the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy. We need a new law that will reveal the paternity of every child. Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing is now available and can be done as early as seven to nine weeks into a pregnancy.

If men are made accountable for impregnating a woman, governments will think twice before passing laws that take away choice from women. The time has come for women to refuse to be shamed by an unwanted pregnancy. Any woman who desires an abortion for whatever reason must have access to a safe medical procedure throughout Canada.

Alberta is going in the wrong direction in so many ways — backwards on its dependence on fossil fuels and on women’s health and women’s rights. Sharon Singer, Toronto
