GoFundMe campaign started for toddler

A GoFundMe campaign has begun in honour of Keira Kagan, the four-year-old found dead at Rattlesnake Point Sunday night.

The fundraiser, set up by family friend Danit Fischtein, described Kagan as special, vibrant, kind-hearted, a wonderful big sister and a loving daughter. The funds collected will be used to commemorate Kagan’s life by going to a cause that was important to her.

“None of the proceeds will go to us for any reason … We want her to be remembered,” said Philip Viater, Kagan’s stepdad. “Her life cannot be in vain … Keira was the kind of person that would change the world for the better,” wrote Fischtein on the GoFundMe page.

The fundraiser aims to raise $10,000, and as of Tuesday night it had already collected $7,765.

Viater said he and his wife, Jennifer Kagan, Keira’s mother, were going to the coroner’s office to say goodbye to the four-year-old.

Halton police said the deaths are not considered homicides “at this point,” but their investigation continues. Police said the homicide unit is routinely called in to investigate all deaths involving children under the age of five.

The child and her father went missing Sunday afternoon and their bodies were found around 11 p.m. Police said the pair’s injuries were consistent with a fall.

Viater said he and his wife believe Keira’s father, Robin Brown, jumped off the cliff in a murder-suicide.
