Teen arrested for driving triple QEW speed limit

A19-year-old has been arrested after allegedly driving triple the speed limit on the QEW Saturday evening, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

In a video posted on Twitter Sunday, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver, who was alongside another 19-yearold man in the passenger seat, was spotted by an officer near Dorval Drive allegedly going 308 km/h, or roughly 85 metres per second, around 10 p.m.

“I’m pretty much speechless on this one,” Schmidt said. “This is absolutely egregious for anyone to be going those kinds of speeds.” The speed limit is 100 km/h. “When you’re going triple the speed limit, I don’t even know where to begin with that,” Schmidt said.

“Driving your dad’s car … opening it up to see what it’s capable of doing, is beyond words.”

The driver’s licence has been suspended for seven days and the vehicle, a Mercedes, has been impounded for the same amount of time. He has also been charged with street racing under the Highway Traffic Act, as well as dangerous driving.

“This is not a racetrack on the QEW,” Schmidt added.

“This driver, who thinks he’s a pretty good driver, thinks he can drive fast cars and race cars and be the coolest guy on the block, but when you take that kind of attitude and you put it out on the highway, with other people around you? Unbelievable.”

The driver was released at the scene, Schmidt added.

“He’s got a little bit of explaining to do to mom and dad this Mother’s Day morning, wondering why dad’s car is no longer in the garage.”
