Pedestrian, motorcycli­st die in separate crashes

A 75-year-old woman is dead after being struck by the driver of a City of Toronto pickup truck in Scarboroug­h. The woman was hit at Lawrence Avenue East and Fern Meadow Road, near Morningsid­e Avenue, at around 10 a.m. Wednesday. She died at the scene, paramedics said. Toronto police said the victim was walking with a friend on the south sidewalk of Lawrence Avenue East when a 39-year-old woman, driving a City of Toronto pickup truck, was headed west on Lawrence.

She lost control of the vehicle, mounted the north sidewalk and struck a fence. She then went back into oncoming eastbound traffic, mounted the south sidewalk and struck the 75-year-old woman. The friend walking with the victim was able to get out of the way.

The driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The city said it intends to cooperate fully with police and the Ministry of Labour as they investigat­e the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the collision.

On Tuesday night in Scarboroug­h, a 33-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle crash. Toronto police responded to a collision at Tapscott Road and Melford Drive, south of Finch Avenue East, at about 9:10 p.m.

The man was going north on Tapscott Road when he lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown from it onto the roadway, they say. The victim was taken to hospital with lifethreat­ening injuries, and later died. Police haven’t released his name. Police are investigat­ing the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the collision and are asking anyone with surveillan­ce in the area or dash cam footage to contact them.
