Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after a man was shot by Peel police in Brampton on Tuesday night.

The Special Investigations Unit said in a news release that police were investigating a carjacking, when officers attempted a “takedown” of the suspects in a vehicle in a gas station parking lot at around 7:45 p.m., near Torbram Road and Williams Parkway. There were three suspects in the car, Peel police said.

An “interaction” took place, says the SIU, and an officer shot a 24-year-old man who was in the vehicle.

“Investigators from our robbery investigation bureau were involved in monitoring some robbery suspects,” Const. Bancroft Wright told reporters at the scene. “At some point in the monitoring, there was an interaction between the suspects and police, whereby one of the suspects was shot.”

That man suffered non-lifethreatening injuries, police said, and was taken to hospital for surgery.

The men in the vehicle are all in their 20s, police told reporters at the scene.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The SIU is also urging anyone who may have information about this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is also asking anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the agency’s website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that is called in to investigate any incident involving police and a member of the public that results in death, serious injury, or an allegation of sexual assault.

This is the fourth time this year that Peel police have shot a person.

> On Jan. 7, Jamal Derek Jr. Francique, 28, was shot and killed by police after he was found as a “person of interest” in a drug investigation in Mississauga.

> On April 6, D’Andre Campbell, 26, was fatally shot by Peel police at his Brampton home after officers responded to a domestic incident.

> On June 20, Ejaz Choudry, 62 was shot and killed by Peel police after barricading himself in a bedroom at an apartment building in Mississauga. His family is demanding to know why the officers didn’t de-escalate the situation before opening fire.
