A three-year-old boy is dead and his seven-year-old sister is injured after three people were struck by a vehicle in Etobicoke on Tuesday morning, Toronto police say.

The police were called to The East Mall and Burnhamthorpe Road around 11:07 a.m. after reports of a 36-year-old man and two children being struck by a vehicle.

The man struck is the father of the children.

In a news release on Tuesday night, police said that the family was crossing from the west side of the East Mall to the east side at Montebello Gardens.

At the same time, police say, an 81-year-old woman, driving a “black vehicle” west on Montebello Gardens, turned left to go south on The East Mall.

The woman struck the family, who police say were still in the middle of crossing the street.

The kids and their father were taken to hospital. The threeyear-old boy succumbed to his injuries, while the seven-yearold girl and the 36-year-old father were diagnosed with “relatively minor injuries,” police said in the release.

Police said the driver was cooperating with police and was being treated for shock.

Sgt. Brett Moore told the Star that police are trying to get more details.

Data from Toronto Police Service show that over the past four years, at least two pedestrians have been seriously injured in collisions at The East Mall and Burnhamthorpe. On the evening of June 3, 2016, a pedestrian was injured after a driver failed to yield on a red light. In April 2017, a pedestrian, who had the right of way, was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured while crossing the street.

Toronto police were on scene and the area was closed to traffic until Tuesday evening for investigation. They are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam video to contact them.
