A Sept. 26 column about Ontario not having returned to Stage 2 partial economic lockdown amid rising COVID-19 cases said coronavirus droplets remain airborne for at least three days. According to the latest available research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the droplets remain airborne for up to three hours. However, it is not known how long infectious droplets linger in enclosed spaces. The CDC reports that it is not yet known how many hours or days the novel coronavirus lingers in a room, elevator or other enclosed space. Factors include the size of the space, how often the air recirculates, how long an infected person was in the space, whether that person was emitting the virus by coughing or sneezing, and how often the space is cleaned with anti-bacterial agents.
