‘Come From Away’ goes to Australia
“Come From Away” is coming back to the stage — in Australia. Producers announced Tuesday that the hit Canadian musical will reopen Jan. 19 in Melbourne, becoming the first of the global productions of “Come From Away” to return to theatres. “Now, more than ever, ‘Come From Away’ is the perfect show for our time; an opportunity to come together and celebrate an inspirational story of hope and humanity,” said a news release. Sankoff, about how people in Gander and other small Newfoundland communities welcomed 7,000 air passengers grounded by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, has been a hit with audiences on Broadway, London’s West End, on tour in North America and in Toronto, where it was in its third year when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It has won a Tony Award, four Olivier Awards and numerous other prizes, and was the most successful production in the 91-year history of Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre after opening there in July 2019.
