Trade: Leafs give Galchenyuk a shot

- Kevin McGran

The Maple Leafs acquired winger Alex Galchenyuk in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, giving up two players who did not figure in their future.

The Leafs sent Egor Korshkov and David Warsofsky to the Hurricanes for the 27-year-old Galchenyuk, who was drafted third overall by Montreal in 2012 — two spots ahead of Leaf Morgan Rielly.

The oft-travelled Galchenyuk — a former 30-goal scorer — started the season with the Ottawa Senators and was traded last week to Carolina, who

put him on waivers. He could be assigned to the AHL Marlies, having cleared waivers and not crossed the border since the Senators dealt him.

Galchenyuk scored 30 goals in 2015-16, his best season, but the Leafs will likely see him as a bottom-six forward option.

?? ?? The Leafs are the third stop in Canada for Alex Galchenyuk, after stints in Montreal and Ottawa.
