‘Tell me what to do please’

Man pulls over on 407 outside Pickering to help deliver his wife’s baby

Erika Campbell and her husband were on their way to the hospital to deliver their third child when the baby entered the world sooner than expected.

On May 10, on the drive to the hospital and with husband Troy Campbell vlogging the ride, Erika noticed her contractions were coming fast and furious. They put a call into Erika’s midwife, who planned to meet them at the hospital for the delivery.

But Erika felt the baby was ready to come out and told her husband.

“You gotta push?” Troy said. “What do you mean ‘You gotta push?’ ”

“I’m trying to hold it in,” Erika said.

Another call to the midwife that this baby wasn’t waiting had the couple pull over to the side of the road on Highway 407 near Brock Road in Pickering.

“If the baby’s coming, you’ve got to pull over and call 911,” said the midwife.

The midwife stayed on the one phone while Troy ran to the passenger’s side to deliver the child, with the aid of the 911 dispatcher.

“I can see the baby’s head,” Troy exclaimed. “The baby’s head is out.”

It was followed by a desperate “Tell me what to do please.”

Before Troy could get the blanket he was told to collect, the baby was out and on mom’s chest.

Two hours later, they posted an update from the safety of the hospital.

“I think I’m slowly coming out of shock a little bit. A little bit. Because I just delivered a baby on the side of the highway,” Troy said.

“Well, I delivered the baby,” corrected Erika, with a smile. “He caught it.”
