Cracking down on unreadable plates needs to be a priority

-

Photo radar and red light cameras are popping up everywhere in the GTA. Here’s where they are, and why they matter, Aug. 18

Recent articles have identified the increasing need for automated speed enforcement cameras in Southern Ontario. The situation is growing more dangerous and we need to quickly address this situation, where speed demons seem to operate at will, with little or no fear of the police.

Not only do we observe crazy, reckless driving on the 400-series highways, but we observe the criminal stupidity of drivers in subdivisions exceeding the 50 km/h limit by 30 or 40 km/h.

However, before we can totally rely on these machines, we need to address another problem that seems to be largely ignored by authorities, and that is the thousands of cars operating in Ontario with partially or totally illegible licence plates.

I understand this is also against the law, but it is obviously being ignored by police.

It would appear that someone who deliberately operates a vehicle with unreadable plates could also be the type who would speed by these new speed traps knowing they couldn’t be caught.

We need authorities to fix both problems. Bruce Hathaway, Newcastle, Ont.
