Fit for fall

-

Brian A. Richards has been on a mission to promote the country’s talented designers at home and abroad, all throughout his glam work history as a famed fashion-show producer, sought-after stylist and as one of Toronto’s bestdressed citizens. (His sunglasses and hat collection? Legendary.) “Geographically, Canadian designers are unencumbered by trend, inspired by the literal four seasons. It’s safe to say, function is fashion here in Canada,” Richards says. “Toronto itself is turning out so many great and inspirational designs because we are a culturally diverse city. And when it comes to fashion, shopping locally not only supports our domestic economy, but what better way is there to represent a city that you are proud to be from?”

Post-pandemic, we’re all re-learning how to dress for the outside world. Here, Richards recommends four simple GTA-designed stunners that are easy for anyone to wear and will add chic to any fall ensemble, whether you’re brunch-bound or prepping for your first vacay away.

Tank by Spencer Badu

“Spencer Badu designs his unisex collections out of Toronto, producing functional apparel for more monochromatic fall looks. I particularly love Spencer’s take on basics, like his deceptively simple black tank top. Breathable fabric and offering comfort in complex cuts, this tank is the perfect indoor surprise, layered underneath a fall jacket or over a crisp white shirt.”

Frames by Spectacle

“Whether prescription glasses or shades, the Queen Street West flagship offers something for every face. My personal must-haves are the Rushton Rd. frames by Spectacle in-house brand t&k. Feather-light and durable, these frames will be your new go-to, punctuating every one of your fall looks with ease, whether out on the town or out for brunch.”

Socks by Kotn

“Based out of Toronto and a certified B Corporation, Kotn sustainably sources their fabric from Egypt. Working directly with communities’ small farm-holders, Kotn donates a portion of their proceeds to fund and build schools in the Nile Delta and Faiyum. So, with every sale you know you’re contributing to sustainable practices and generally a good cause.”

Chain by Vitaly

“This Toronto brand designs edgy, unisex accessories ranging from rings to bracelets. I personally love their simple Flower Basket Weave Chain; it’s a timeless piece, that layers nicely with a casual fit or formalwear. Reasonably priced, Vitaly offers so many quality options, from my basic chain to more adventurous statements. Regardless of the style you pick, a Vitaly piece will instantly upgrade your favourite looks this fall.”
