Bilingualism needs to be a two-way street
Re We should strive to speak Canada’s official languages, Sept. 18
Norris McDonald’s column made huge traction with me.
I am definitely in the same lane. Our wonderful country is not truly bilingual. We recently visited Levis and Rivière du Loup on a road trip and were shamed by the excellent English our apologetic (“my English is so bad”) hosts used after hearing our terrible French. Would they receive the same linguistic kindness if they visited Ontario cities? Being served in French or English needs to be a two-way street. Marybeth Colman, Barrie, Ont.
