EGLINTONLAWRENCE

- Ben Cohen

Marco Mendicino has won the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence for the Liberals.

He has represented the riding in the House of Commons since 2015. In 2019, he was named minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, a role he still holds.

In June, he announced plans to expedite applications and increase the number of refugees to Canada from 23,500 to 45,000.

Mendicino successfully fended off challenges in this election from Conservative Geoff Pollock, a lawyer, NDP candidate Caleb Senneker, a former customer service representative at the LCBO and enumerator at Statistics Canada, and Green party candidate Eric Frydman, a dual-degree law and business student at Osgoode Hall and Schulich School of Business.

After Canada announced its military evacuation mission in Afghanistan had ended, Mendicino told a news conference that he would continue working to “pursue every option to get the people we need to get out of Afghanistan.”
