WILLOWDALE

- Kieran Leavitt

Liberal candidate Ali Ehsassi has won the riding of Willowdale for the party.

Willowdale was held by Conservative Chungsen Leung from 2011 until 2015, when Ehsassi was first elected.

Before entering politics, Ehsassi was a lawyer.

Born in Geneva and raised in New York City and Tehran, Ehsassi settled in North York with his family in his early teens. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, attended the London School of Economics, and received degrees from Osgoode Hall Law School and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

He beat back challenges from Conservative candidate Daniel Lee, who has owned several pharmacies in Willowdale, and NDP candidate Hal Berman, a health-care worker.

During his time in Parliament, Ehsassi has served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of innovation and industry.

The Green party candidate was architect Anna Gorka.
