SCARBOROUGHGUILDWOOD

- Victoria Gibson

John McKay has won the riding of Scarborough-Guildwood for the Liberals. McKay has represented the area in Parliament since 1977, and has held onto the seat since the riding’s boundaries were redrawn to create the current Scarborough-Guildwood in 2003.

Before entering politics, McKay worked as a real estate lawyer. In Ottawa, he’s most recently served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of national defence and chair of the standing committee on public safety and national security. This will be his ninth term in office.

His re-election defeats challenges from Conservative Carmen Wilson, a mortgage and insurance agent, New Democrat Michelle Spencer, who works in cultural education, and People’s Party candidate James Bountrogiannis. The Green party did not run a candidate in the riding.

McKay, who made headlines this spring for a public disagreement with Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Minister Mary Ng over the effectiveness of a human rights watchdog for Canadian companies, is an active member of the Peoples Church, and is married with five children and four grandchildren.
