MARKHAM THORNHILL

- Alex McKeen

Mary Ng has won the riding of Markham-Thornhill for the Liberals.

Ng held onto the riding she has represented since 2017. The previous representative for the riding was former minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship John McCallum, who left his post to become Canada’s ambassador to China in 2017. Ng was elected in a byelection that year, and went on to become minister of small business, export promotion and international trade.

Prior to entering politics, Ng was a longtime public servant, working for various ministers in Ontario’s Liberal government.

The riding of MarkhamThornhill was created for the 2015 election. Prior to that, the area was represented by the ridings Markham-Unionville and Thornhill.

Those two ridings have oscillated between Liberal and Conservative representation.

Ng fended off challenges from Conservative Melissa Felian, a public servant who has worked with Global Affairs Canada, and NDP candidate Paul Sahbaz, a local activist.

She was born in Hong Kong, and obtained a B.A. at the University of Toronto Scarborough.
