SCARBOROUGH— ROUGE PARK

- Victoria Gibson

Gary Anandasangaree has won the riding of Scarborough— Rouge Park for the Liberals.

Anandasangaree has held the seat since 2015, after the riding’s boundaries were redrawn.

The former ridings largely swung Liberal, though Pickering—Scarborough East was Conservative from 2011 to 2015, as Scarborough—Rouge River went to the NDP.

Anandasangaree arrived in Canada as a refugee from Sri Lanka in 1983. A human rights lawyer before entering politics, Anandasangaree most recently held the post of parliamentary secretary to the minister of Crown-Indigenous relations.

He’s been president of the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre and sat on the Toronto Police Chief’s Advisory Council.

Anandasangaree defeated challenges from Conservative Zia Choudhary, a realtor-broker, and the NDP’s Kingsley Kwok, a respiratory therapist.

Anandasangaree is married with two daughters.
