Omar Alghabra has held onto Mississaug­a Centre for the Liberals.

The federal minister of transport has represente­d the GTA seat since 2015. Prior to that, he was the MP representi­ng Mississaug­a—Erindale from 2006 to 2008.

Mississaug­a Centre was assembled for the 2015 election from parts of three other Mississaug­a ridings. It also existed from 1997 to 2004, and has always been represente­d by a Liberal.

Alghabra was challenged in 2021 by Kathy-ying Zhao, an employment consultant specializi­ng in helping immigrants settle in Canada.

Alghabra was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Toronto to study. He has a degree in engineerin­g from Ryerson University, and an MBA from York University.

He has worked as a visiting professor at Ryerson University, and as an executive in the sustainabl­e energy sector.

According to the 2016 federal census, Mississaug­a Centre has more than 124,000 residents, making it the largest riding by population in the city.
