People don’t vote because they feel their votes don’t count

Re Low voter turnout hurts democracy. All parties should fix it, Sept. 24

Your editorial on why people don’t vote somehow missed the elephant in the room: our outdated and unfair first-past-the-post system.

If we had a fairer one where the votes reflected seats and every vote counted, perhaps more people would be inclined to vote.

The current system means ridiculous strategic voting games and parties getting majorities with 35 per cent of the vote. Get a system where every vote counts and people will vote.
