My Thanksgiving was blessed by the kindness of strangers

-

Re The riches of gratitude, Oct. 10

For the first time in many months, a friend of mine visited me and we celebrated her birthday and Thanksgiving together. Her husband died recently and I hope I was able to comfort her in some small way.

It was almost impossible to buy a turkey breast this year. For two people, a whole turkey would be out of the question. So, I visited three Metro stores and there were no turkey breasts to be found.

So I went to the Metro at Bayview and York Mills. Again, no turkey breasts. I did speak to a very pleasant young woman in the poultry section and she told me she had just one turkey breast, bone in, in the back.

On my way to check out, another very nice young woman let me go in front of her to check out. I only had the turkey to purchase, and I use a walker.

To my dismay, I realized I’d left my wallet at home and had grabbed my handbag which did not contain any money or credit cards.

I was horrified, but the young customer actually paid for my turkey and would not let me give her a cheque for the cost of the bird.

I was overwhelmed by her kindness and I hope she is reading this.

There is such kindness in this city and my Thanksgiving is even more special this year. Vera Keogh, Scarborough.
