Staley climbs scale with $22.4M deal

South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley agreed to a seven-year contract extension worth $22.4 million (U.S.). Staley, who led the Gamecocks to the NCAA championsh­ip this year, becomes the highest-paid Black coach in women’s basketball and one of the highest paid coaches in the sport. “The money is staggering,” she said. “It really wasn’t about the money, but it takes the money for this recognitio­n to be eye-opening.” In the off-season, she led the United States to Olympic gold in Tokyo.
