Space is television’s familiar frontier
Here are a few other shows that concern themselves with space, other planets and/or aliens.
War of the Worlds
Since “Invasion” was inspired by “War of the Worlds,” you might like this BritishFrench-American version of the H.G. Wells story, which just debuted its second season. It follows French and British survivors of an alien attack, tracking how they stayed alive in the first season and how they’re fighting back in the second. It stars Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, British actor Daisy Edgar-Jones and French actor Léa Drucker. Stream Season 1 on CBC Gem; new Season 2 episodes drop Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBC and CBC Gem.
Foundation
This is Apple TV Plus’s other big swing in the sci-fi genre, an adaptation of the Isaac Asimov book series. Densely plotted and shifting between planets, it concerns concepts such as a subfield of mathematics that can predict the future and an empire ruled by a line of clones. The cast includes Jared Harris (“Mad Men,” “Chernobyl,” “The Terror”), Lee
Pace (“Halt and Catch Fire”) and newcomer Lou Llobell. Stream Season 1 on Apple TV Plus with new episodes every Friday.
For All Mankind
The fiction in this series’ science comes from reimagining history, as in the Soviets winning the 1960s space race, setting foot on the moon first. The excellent second season imagines the fraught geopolitics of competing U.S. and Russian lunar bases in the 1980s while the yet to be released Season 3 will focus on exploration of Mars. Real-life characters like Buzz Aldrin and Deke Slayton blend with fictional ones, including a cadre of female astronauts. Stream both seasons
on Apple TV Plus. Doctor Who
This series about a time-travelling alien with a soft spot for humanity has been around since 1963. The latest incarnation debuts its 13th season on Halloween, the last for British actor Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor. Stream 12 seasons on Crave. Season 13 premieres Oct. 31 on CTV Sci-Fi Channel.
