Governments failed to supply affordable housing

Re Our choices show a lack of compassion for the homeless, Oct. 26

I believe Denise Davy is right in explaining how the issue of homelessness has grown over the past 40 years. Both the federal and provincial governments abdicated their responsibilities for funding and developing supportive and affordable housing, especially over the past 25 years.

Forty years ago there were many rooming houses in the east end of the city that housed single persons, so they did not have to live on the streets.

There was some sense of community. Now, most of this kind of housing has disappeared and the city has fallen in love with the building of condos.

Yes, the city is trying to build more affordable housing and catch up, but it will be a long and slow process.

The answer is not more tent encampments in parks and on the streets.

Advocacy and more funding for mental-health clinics and supportive housing programs provide better solutions for the homeless.
