ANTHONY (TON) CAMPFENS

MRAIC

-

Ton was an architect and a Toronto city planner. He was also a musician, artist, storyteller, a lover of life, and an original spirit.

Ton was born in Vught, the Netherlands in 1930. He grew up during the war in a household that actively participated in the underground and oЇered refuge to a Jewish woman and young child. This tolerant and open-minded culture deЈned who he was for the rest of his life. He immigrated to Canada in 1955 and graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Architecture.

Ton expressed his creativity in the reconstruction of the family home on Toronto Island, where he lived with his wife Sjan and their children, Jan and Resja. This period in his life was deЈned by creative interests that he shared with his wife, and the friendships that he formed with adults and children alike. Their house was a gathering place for the local children and Ton organised and invented games for them, as he was also a child at heart.

When Ton met his second love Corry and her children Daphne and John, they called Toronto and Peterborough home. This began an exciting period that lasted the rest of his life. The couple combined their love of building with his creative and technical skills on endless projects. They loved travelling, music and the outdoors.

Ton loved people and had an endless curiosity which enabled him to bring people together with joy and spontaneity. It was not uncommon for him to wheel his piano to the ferry docks to entertain arriving passengers with his musician friends, and for many, Ton's piano playing was integral to their lives. His exuberant wonder carried him and his family through his long struggle with Alzheimer's with optimism and grace. The family is grateful for the amazing care and support that they and Ton received from the many nurses, doctors, personal support workers and others who cared for him so well during his Јnal years.

Ton was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many, both here and in the Netherlands. He will be missed incredibly.

An event will be planned when warm weather allows us to celebrate Ton̯s rich life outdoors with friends and family.
