Phone charging

For vehicles without a factoryinstalled wireless phone-charging pad, the Simplefast R3 Wireless Car Charger from Lukkahh could be the solution. The company says the unit is compatible with all sizes of Apple, Note Google, Nexus, LG, Nokia and Samsung cellphones. The unit attaches to a vehicle air vent, and can be rotated to the desired position once the phone is clamped in place. The product is also claimed to work without removing the phone from its case. Along with the mount, the Simplefast R3, at $21 (U.S.) from amazon.com (plus shipping to Canada), comes with an air-vent clip and charging cable.

Key to electricity

For vehicles that are stored, it’s important to disconnect the battery. This prevents electrical fires and means the battery will not be drained by the car. Flaming River Industries sells several mechanical battery-disconnect switches (which also prevent hot wiring / theft), as well as a full line of Electro Wizard automatic units. When the FR1052 Watchdog is wired into the vehicle, it cuts power to the battery when the ignition key is turned off. Switch the key to the on position and the power automatically comes back. Essentially, it turns the battery on and off with the ignition. The FR1052’s timedelay feature can be set for up to six minutes before the power is interrupted. The unit is suitable for automotive — as well as marine applications — and has been tested under severe weather conditions. Order one for about $196 (U.S.) from flamingriver.com.

Blades that scrub

Highway driving can be problematic when your windshield becomes a magnet for bugs and other road residue. Turning on your regular wipers and spraying washer fluid can make things worse. Scrubblade’s patented triangular technology is designed to scrub and wipe at the same time, leaving you with a clearer view of the road. Blade sizes range from 11 inches (28 centimetres) to 28 inches (71 centimetres), which means there’s likely a size to fit every vehicle, from compact cars to long-haul tractors. Prices per blade range from $13 to $23 (U.S.) for the heavy-duty models, or $17 to $27 (U.S.) for the Platinum versions. Rear-window blades start at $18 (U.S.). Purchase a set and check out the company’s related accessories at scrubblade.com.
