Scrapping licence stickers a bad idea for many reasons

Ford wants to scrap licence plate stickers, Feb. 8

Eliminating vehicle registration fees and renewal stickers is a bad idea for a number of reasons:

There will be a continual loss of ■ more than $1 billion per annum in tax revenues for provincial coffers.

Without the requirement to renew ■ vehicle registrations annually, or biannually, vehicle owners will not be inclined to notify the Ministry of Transportation of a change of address, notwithstanding that the Highway Traffic Act requires that this be done within six days of a change in residence.

The Federal Department of ■ Transport relies on this up-to-date address information to send out safety recall notices to vehicle owners. The provincial government will still have to issue some form of renewal evidence to truck and bus registrants for enforcement purposes of annual registration fees.

Privately run Service Ontario offices ■ rely on renewal fee commissions as a significant portion of their revenues.

If the government truly wishes to cut costs for voters (vehicle registrants), why not just reduce the annual registration fee for vehicle owners and perhaps driver renewal fees as well?
